For the last several months, debate over gun violence in America has been raging the same way it's raged in the wake of nearly every mass shooting with the exception of one: after Aurora theater massacre, there was a sense of something strange and unprecedented even "a bit like a crime wave" that went along with the headlines and coverage.
Even as the political discourse has remained firmly centered on guns in the wake of each high-profile attack, orlistat hexal france the issue of gun violence has rarely been explicitly addressed in any kind of comprehensive way. So for this month's National Gun Violence Awareness Month, I am presenting the most significant stories of gun violence in America through the lens of my research as a criminology major at The George Washington University during summer 2012.

As is the case almost everywhere in United States, guns are a tool for dealing with violence. The most common firearm in use is the handgun (more around than any other), but just about every state in America has at least one type of concealed carry permit, so people can with concealed weapons, whether or not they have a permit. About 40,000 people are shot each year in the United States, with about 7,000 of those firearm deaths related to domestic violence, murder, and suicide, according to USA Today, which also notes that about 1 percent of all firearm deaths are due to accidents, some of which are suicides rather than homicides. That accounts for around a third of the all firearm deaths each year.
But the percentage of gun deaths attributable to each is a bit deceptive when it comes to understanding the true scope of gun violence in the United States. general, we hear a lot about the homicide rate in this country–about 20 deaths per 100,000 year, more than twice the average rate for other comparable countries. That's not a particularly useful metric, because homicides are not just the most common way to die from gun violence in the United States–they represent a substantial portion of total fatality and injury from guns. This is something I touched on in an earlier column, but consider these rates of gun violence in the following scenarios:
